How to Care for a Wool Pillow

Organic Wool Pillows are a Popular Choice

Organic wool pillows have become increasingly popular in recent years thanks to the many benefits they offer. Wool's natural breathability and temperature-regulating properties keep you cool in summer and warm in winter, while its resilience ensures long-lasting support. Wool is also hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, mould, mildew, and bacteria, making wool pillows an ideal option for allergy sufferers. Additionally, wool pillows are incredibly durable - wool fibres are some of the strongest known, able to withstand an incredible amount of pressure without breaking down. This means that wool pillows can last longer than traditional synthetic material options without losing shape or support quality.

The Care and Maintenance of Wool Pillows

It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The type of wool and the way the pillow is constructed determines the steps you take to keep it clean and fresh. Eco-Friendly Wool Fiber products are designed to be washable and long-lasting.

Eco-Friendly Wool Fiber products are made from organic and sustainable materials meaning they’re completely free from any pesticides or chemicals which could be damaging to the environment. Here are some guidelines:

  • Always start by following the label instructions. You may need to limit cleaning to spot cleaning and dry cleaning only.
  • Avoid hot water and hot drying. Normal wash cycles shrink and cause wool fibres to “felt,” making wool fibres lumpy.
  • A large commercial-size washer is better. This allows better water flow and prevents fibre lumping.
  • Use the wash with a cold water setting.
  • Don’t wash your organic wool pillow in a mixed load of laundry, and avoid drying more than two pillows at a time.
  • Make sure that when you dry your pillows, they tumble continuously without obstruction (toss in a tennis ball).
  • Select a lower temperature and a larger dryer.

Freshening Up Your Pillow

As seasons change, you might want to freshen up your pillow. In this case, the washing is focused on the pillow covers. Wash on delicate and always hang dry instead of throwing covers in the dryer.

The organic wool can be pulled apart and fluffed up with your fingers instead of washing the wool core. A nice fresh, sunny day is ideal for airing out your wool pillow. During winter, a sunny spot indoors with a window open works well.

Try punching your pillow. Giving your pillow a good punching redistributes and refreshes the wool. You can also place the pillow in a dryer with tennis balls for a similar effect and keep it on low heat.

The best way to store your organic wool pillow is to seal them in a plastic bag or box. Moths and beetles can get through very tight spaces, so they are completely sealed. Vacuum-sealed plastic storage bags are also a great option if you can access them.
