Organic Dunlop

In the shadows of the Western Ghats lies one of history's most important agricultural hubs, the famous spice garden of Kerala. Intermingling among fields of cardamon, pepper, and turmeric are forests of Hevea brasiliensis, otherwise known as the rubber tree. Farming in the Kottayam district of Kerala is a family tradition carried out on plots of land passed down through generations. This innate connection to the land and rich biodiversity results in a rubber unmatched in its provenance and elasticity. Harnessing the remarkable power of natural elasticity is the bedrock upon which the best latex mattress makers form their craft.

Cotton Batting

Our futons are filled with layers of natural cotton batting, offering a firm, grounded feel that has been trusted for generations. Made without synthetic foams or additives, cotton provides a breathable, moisture-wicking sleep surface that conforms over time to the shape of your body. It delivers even, supportive cushioning ideal for those who prefer a minimalist or traditional sleeping experience. Whether used on the floor or in a futon frame, cotton batting creates a clean, natural foundation for rest—durable, non-toxic, and crafted to age gracefully with use.

Wool Wrap

Our futon mattresses are wrapped in a layer of natural wool to enhance comfort, breathability, and moisture regulation. The wool acts as a built-in temperature control system—keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer—while also adding a soft, cushioned feel to the surface of the mattress. Naturally resistant to dust mites and mildew, wool is a clean, chemical-free alternative to synthetic fibers. Quilted directly into the mattress and secured with hand tufts, the wool wrap is not removable, but it plays an essential role in the mattress’s all-season comfort and long-lasting durability.

Cotton Comfort

Our futon mattresses are finished with a strong, breathable cotton twill or canvas cover, designed to handle daily use while maintaining a clean, natural feel. The tightly woven cotton fabric allows for airflow, helping to regulate temperature and prevent heat buildup. Hand-tufted for lasting structure, the cover is non-removable and forms an integral part of the futon’s traditional construction. Whether used on a bed frame or folded into a sofa position, this cotton cover adds durability and comfort to your natural sleep setup.

FAQ

A futon mattress is a versatile, foldable mattress traditionally made with layers of cotton batting. Originally from Japan, some futons are designed for use directly on the floor while other should be used on a slatted frame. At Nature’s Embrace, we craft Canadian-made futons using natural materials like cotton, organic latex, and wool. Our futons are ideal for minimalist sleepers, guest rooms, or everyday sofa-to-bed use.

Learn more: What is a futon mattress?

Technically you can place your futon mattress directly on the floor, but we recommend doing so with extreme caution and taking it off the floor daily. Cotton is highly sensitive to moisture and will mould if you use it on the floor and don't air it our daily. We're going to repeat it one more time so it's clear. If you use your futon or shikibuton on the floor (or floor like materiel such as tatami mats) you must air it out daily. No exceptions.

To extend the life of your futon mattress, rotate and flip it every 2–4 weeks to promote even wear and prevent body impressions. Always use your futon on a slatted or breathable frame, or pair it with a coconut coir bed rug for airflow. To protect against dirt and stains, use a removable futon cover or mattress protector. With proper care, your futon will remain supportive and comfortable for many years.

Probably. Most older futon mattresses—especially those made in the last few decades—used polyurethane foam layers between cotton batting to improve the overall performance. At Nature’s Embrace, we replaced the synthetic foam layers with organic rubber for a more durable, breathable, and supportive futon without the synthetic downsides of conventional foam.

Yes, latex has a natural aroma. This scent is non-toxic and usually dissipates within a few days to a few weeks, depending on ventilation and a person's sensitivity to smell. In rare cases, those with very strong sensitivities may always notice a slight odour. However, it’s very different from the strong chemical off-gassing you may experience with synthetic foams. Many people even find the natural latex smell neutral or even pleasant. If you’re sensitive to scents, we can air the components in our factory upon request. This process takes 2-3 weeks.

Yes, raw cotton batting can have a natural, earthy scent that comes from the cotton plant itself. This is especially true with unbleached, untreated cotton, which retains more of its organic characteristics. The smell is generally mild and non-toxic and often fades with use and ventilation. Unlike synthetic materials or chemically treated foams, our natural cotton batting contains no perfumes or artificial deodorizers, making it ideal for those with chemical sensitivities. If the scent is noticeable at first, we recommend airing out the mattress or futon in a well-ventilated room.
