The Difference between an Organic and Synthetic Mattress

You may not have given much thought to what’s inside your mattress in the past, but if you’re looking for a way to reduce your carbon imprint and be kinder to the environment, a natural latex mattress is the right way to go. Keep reading to learn more about the difference between synthetic and organic mattresses, and why everyone in Canada should make the switch.

What’s In a Synthetic Mattress?

The average mattress is typically made with a combination of natural and synthetic materials, including steel coil springs, wire mesh, polyurethane foam, Memory Foam foam, and polyester. All mattresses must also contain some type of flame-retardant in order to adhere to national safety standards and synthetic mattresses typically use chemically based barriers to achieve compliance.

What’s In an Organic Mattress?

Organic mattresses are made from natural materials like organic latex, wool, and cotton. Because wool is naturally flame retardant, they don’t need to contain additional fire barriers to enhance their flame resistance like a synthetic mattress would. Organic cotton, wool and latex are also highly breathable and naturally allergen, dust, mite, and mould resistant.

The Difference Between the Two

The main differences between a synthetic mattress and an organic one are the materials and chemicals used during the manufacturing process.

Synthetic materials are chemically based result in a final product that is potentially hazardous to your health, and to the environment. The lifespan of the typical mattress is approximately 10 years, after which point, many end up in the landfill.

The natural materials used to make organic mattresses are not treated with harsh chemicals and are biodegradable, thus reducing your carbon footprint.  A latex mattress offers more support, comfort and durability that you might expect from a regular mattress but with none of the same health and environmental hazards. Not only that, but organic mattresses also contribute to a better sleep environment, and are incredibly durable.
